If you are pregnant and take regular medication, you may be eligible for a medication review with the Family Services Pharmacy Team.
What happens during a review?
飥� All patients admitted to hospital in the UK should have their medication history assessed by a member of the pharmacy team within 24 hours of admission. In some situations, it is more appropriate to do this ahead of time, including pregnancy.
飥� At around 28-30 weeks into your pregnancy, one of our team will contact you in advance to arrange a suitable date and time to chat about your medications. If a chat over the telephone is not possible, we can email you a form to complete and return to us instead.
飥� We will document your regular medication and other relevant information on your electronic hospital patient record.
飥� You will have the opportunity to ask questions about your medications.
飥� This information will then be available to the doctors and midwives at the hospital when you come in to give birth, to minimise disruption to your usual medication routine.聽
飥� Your review will be completed by a pharmacy technician or junior pharmacist on either a Thursday or Friday between 1pm and 5pm. If there are any questions that need referring to a senior pharmacist for further input, you may be contacted additionally outside of these times.
飥� Please note: we do not routinely conduct reviews of women taking pregnancy vitamins, folic acid, or medication for Gestational Diabetes as these usually do not continue during or after birth.
How do I get a referral?
We receive notifications of pregnant women who are identified as taking medication at their booking
appointment, so you do not need to do anything.
If you have not received a phone call or review and you are expecting one, please ask your community
midwife to refer you to us via email.

Our Family Services pharmacy team consists of two pharmacists and a pharmacy technician, who provide
pharmacy services to the ante-natal clinic, maternity day assessment unit and maternity inpatient wards.
Pharmacy technicians are trained in all technical aspects of pharmacy, and assessing medication history is
a key skill. Pharmacists are trained in how medicines work, and can advise on choice, dose, interactions
between different medications; and their side effects.
