Tests/ Investigations Which May Take Place for Myelodysplastic Syndrome (MDS)

If your GP suspects that you may have myelodysplastic syndrome, you will be referred to a hospital to see a specialist doctor called a Haematologist.

You will have a team of specialists that will plan your care through diagnosis, treatment and beyond. This includes a Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS) who will be your main point of contact during and after treatment.

Tests may include:

  • Full blood count
  • Bone marrow biopsy
  • Genetic testing

If you are diagnosed with myelodysplastic syndrome, you will need further tests to determine the type of MDS you have and your risk group. MDS can develop into another type of cancer called acute myeloid leukaemia.
