If your GP has any concerns, they will refer you to the Cancer of Unknown Primary (CUP) Pathway here at the hospital for further testing.
Before your first appointment, it would be helpful if you could consider any relevant information on the following beforehand:
- Past Medical HistoryÌý- previous illnesses or operations.
- Regular medicationsÌý- a list of prescriptions is useful.
- Family HistoryÌý- close relatives who may have had a diagnosis of cancer.
There are some useful links available on the following page, to help you prepare for appointments: Preparing for your appointments.
For your initial appointment, you will receive a call from our CUP Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS) who will explain the pathway to you, including the process from referral to diagnosis. During this initial call they may ask a range of questions that will be helpful in informing and guiding the next steps in your care.
It is highly likely that further tests will be required to help determine a diagnosis, which tests are required depends on your individual circumstances.
For information on tests and investigations which may be involved, please visit Tests and investigations which may take place.
The results from these tests will be reviewed at a Multi-Disciplinary Team (MDT) meeting, where a group of specialists will review the results to try to determine a diagnosis.
